Diary Jan - Sept 1996


The work was started on 19 January 1996 following the invitation to the speed record attempt in Fakenberg. Initially the record attempt was scheduled in June, leaving only four months to build the Dreamliner.

16 March

Front end and steering
All part except the steering hub are ready. The steering can be adjusted to different sensitivities within a wide range. The front end has been properly aligned and welded to the chaise.

Driver's safety cage
All load bearing members are ready. Some welding remains to be done. The driver's position and the location of the steering wheel and the pedals has been determined.

Tail section
Much work remains to be done here. Parts of the structure and transmission has been manufactured. Some machining work has been laid out. A 250cc engine is available for test driving, but the team is searching for an engine more suitable for the record attempt.

10 April

General
The chaise was on wheels by 23 March, one week ahead of plan. The tail section is considerably stiffer in torsion than expected. Despite its arrow width the car has proven remarkably difficult to turn over on its side.

Driver's safety cage
Additional secondary structure is ready. The pedal arrangement is designed and the break- and clutch pedals has been manufactured.

Tail section
All primary load bearing structure is complete. The rear axle has been cut to length, adjusted to its proper position and the bearing holders has been spot welded in place.

6 May

Front end
All structure complete. Some welding remains to be done. The pedal arrangement is approaching completion.

Tail section
All primary load bearing structure is complete and welded. The whole transmission is ready except for some special keys, and has been test assembled. The engine mountings are ready and both engines have been trial-mounted. The 85cc Radne Raket has been test run in the chaise. The firewall is ready as well as the attachment of the break caliper. The gear shifting mechanism is well underway.

21 May

Front end
All welding completed. The aluminum lining of the driver's compartment is completed. The aluminum body pieces are ready and glued tin place. All the safety harness attachments are ready. The steering finalized. The pedals are ready and have been put in place but not hooked up. The work on the composite body panels has begun.

Tail section
All welding complete. Both engines installations finalized. Break caliper and disk attached. The complete transmission including the rear axle assembled. The cooling system is under way.

Miscellaneous
The speedometer modifications are complete. A sailplane trailer is booked for transport and reservations has been made to use the Tullinge airfield for test runs.

29 May

General
The car was run at Tullinge airfield on 26 May. The cooling system works beyond expectation. The car seems to require very little power and is showing no signs of tipping over.

Front end
All pedals and acuators except the braking parachute lever are finalized. 60 % of the front end composite body is ready.

Tail section
The cooling system including the ice tank is ready. The electric system has been completed and checked out. The bottom panel has been manufactured and glued in place.

June 5

General
The record attempts in Falkenberg has been postponed until September due to bad weather. This gives the team some much appreciated extra time. After a few days of well earned rest the work is resumed.

Front end
The construction of the composite body panels continue. Most lamination work on the panels is ready.

Tail section
The transmission has been modified. The aluminum side body panels are ready. The tailcone is being manufactured and most of the structure is ready.

12 July

General
During June, very little work has been done on the Dreamliner. The team members has taken vacation from the project to attend more urgent matters like friends and family. Some minor body work has been done and the 250cc engine has been returned to its owner. The search for a new engine has started.

16 August

General
A 350cc motorcycle was bought on August 16. An intense work of integrating the new engine started immediately. At the same time all details on the body like intakes, attachment pints and hinges are being finalized.

4 September

General
The front wheel geometry has been modifier after the last test runs. The last attachments for the engine cowling are ready. A special cart for turning the car has been manufactured. The car and all necessary equipment has been packed in the car and trailer. The trip to Falkenberg begins.
